What Style For Your Garden?
If you have the chance to start from scratch (moved in to a newly built
house for example) or have decided, for whatever reason, to completely
revamp your garden then here is a short guide to garden styles. To be read
in conjunction with ‘A Guide To Changing Your Garden’
Formal Styles
Think your local stately home. Straight lines, symmetry and geometry. Few
different plants. Lowish maintenance when established. Not child friendly –
they’ll think it’s boring.
English Cottage Garden
Think ‘olde worlde’ thatched cottage. Apparently random planting. Lots of
different plants. Looks fantastic in summer but can be boring in winter. You
need a knowledge of plants and gardening techniques. High maintenance.
Contemporary Gardens
Think Diarmud Gavin or Henry Moore. Minimalist. Materials such as gravel,
galvanised metal containers, glass blocks, steel. Few and narrow range of
plants e.g. grasses, bamboo. Suited to town gardens, roof gardens and modern
houses and apartments. Low maintenance.
Mediterranean Gardens
Think the south of France, Greece and southern Spain. Informal with bright
colours from plants, furniture and containers. Suited to a sunny garden.
Gravel not grass as a surface. Drought tolerant plants such as lavender,
rosemary, thyme, euphorbia. Low maintenance. Suits small spaces e.g. a
courtyard and can be part of a patio.
Exotic Gardens
Think big green leaves. Good for small and sheltered spaces. Plants such as
banana, chusan palm, Australian tree fern, agapanthus, bamboo. Plants may
need protection and plenty of water – probable high maintenance and you need
to know about the plants.
People Centred Gardens
All of the above fit this category if you like the style. We are talking
here about gardens that meet the needs of all members of your household.

Remember that you don’t have to stick rigidly to one style – you can
personalise it and you can have more than one style. It’s YOUR garden.
